A tantalising encounter boasting melodrama off the pitch and tactical intrigue on it, Napoli took their mesmeric brand of football to the Juventus Stadium fortress hoping to reassert their ambition and snatch the win.

The pressure was on Napoli to prove that despite the departure of Gonzalo Higuain and Arkadiusz Milik’s injury, they had enough to compete for the title. A win would send a clear message to their Scudetto rivals, a defeat would render them, in the eyes of their critics, incapable of mounting a serious challenge. After all, Juventus could afford to lose, Massimiliano Allegri had already insisted their Champions League match against Lyon midweek would be more important.
