After Juventus' first-leg triumph over Real Madrid in the Champions League semifinals this week, compliments toward the club have been a bit patronising.
Yes, the club doesn't boast as many stars in its squad as the other teams at this stage of the competition, but it seems odd considering that in the past two years, observers have believed in Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid's chances during their respective runs to the finals. So why is Juventus' recent success so surprising?
After all, man for man, this blogger would argue that they have a better squad than either side with a more balanced style of play and genuine European pedigree, evidenced by their two wins (1985 and 1996) in the competition.
